April is Oral Health Month: A Great Time to Focus on Your Smile!

April is Oral Health Month, and Ottawa Public Health is offering free dental screenings, fluoride varnish applications, and helpful resources to promote good oral health for all ages.
April 1, 2025 by Andrea Shane

As part of Oral Health Month, Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is encouraging residents to prioritize their oral health and take advantage of the free resources available this month. Good oral health is essential to a healthy lifestyle, and this month is the perfect time to “brush up” on the benefits of maintaining a bright, healthy smile.

Free Dental Screenings & Fluoride Varnish Applications

Throughout April, OPH is offering free dental screenings and fluoride varnish applications  for individuals of all ages across various locations in Ottawa. These services are provided by trained dental hygienists who are ready to help you better understand your oral health needs.

Enroll in Helpful Dental Programs

OPH also supports residents with enrollment in key dental programs designed to reduce the cost of dental care. Programs include:

  • Services covered by Healthy Smiles Ontario | ontario.ca – Available for children and youth under 18 from low-income households in Ontario.

  • Dental care for seniors | ontario.ca – For low-income seniors aged 65 and older who have no other dental benefits.

  • Canadian Dental Care Plan – Do you qualify – Canada.ca – Available for Canadians under 18, seniors 65+, and adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate, whose adjusted family net income is under $90,000 and who do not have dental insurance.

Eligibility for these programs varies, so it’s important to check the details to see if you qualify.

Learn About Oral Health

Throughout the month, follow OPH’s Facebook for helpful tips on:

  • The importance of the first visit to the dentist

  • How to make brushing fun (and not a battle!)

  • The benefits of visiting a registered dental hygienist for free screenings and fluoride varnish applications

  • General oral health tips to keep your smile healthy and sparkling

Why Oral Health Matters

Oral health is integral to our overall well-being. Good dental habits can have a significant impact on both your physical and mental health. From avoiding tooth decay to preventing gum disease, maintaining your oral health contributes to a better quality of life.
