Lester B. Pearson High School Celebrates 50 Years of Excellence, Leadership, and Legacy

Lester B. Pearson High School’s 50th anniversary was a powerful celebration of five decades of excellence, community, and the lasting legacy of a school that continues to inspire and empower.
May 9, 2025 by Andrea Shane

This spring, Lester B. Pearson High School — a cornerstone of Ottawa’s east end — marked a major milestone: its 50th anniversary. More than a celebration, the event served as a powerful reminder of what happens when a school becomes more than just a building — when it becomes a beacon of growth, community, and belonging.

It was an honour to take part in this momentous occasion.

A Legacy of Empowerment

For five decades, Lester B. Pearson has stood as a testament to what’s possible when young people are empowered to learn, to believe in themselves, and to participate fully in shaping the world around them. The 50th anniversary celebration reflected that enduring spirit — filled with joy, gratitude, and deep pride in the school’s legacy and its future.

The event brought together students, educators, alumni, community members, and distinguished guests — each with a personal connection to the school and its impact.

A Ceremony to Remember

The celebration was expertly led by two outstanding student MCs, Lucas and Brandon, who embodied the confidence and leadership that Lester B. Pearson has nurtured for generations.

Principal Cossette opened the ceremony with heartfelt remarks, celebrating the school’s journey and its commitment to growth, innovation, and inclusion. Her words set the tone for a day rooted in both reflection and hope.

Tom D’Amico, Director of Education for the Ottawa Catholic School Board — and a former teacher at the school — shared his own meaningful connection to the Pearson community. His return in a leadership role was a full-circle moment, underscoring the lasting influence of the school.

Honouring a National Legacy

A deeply moving highlight of the day was the presence of Mr. Michael Pearson, grandson of Lester B. Pearson — Canada’s former Prime Minister and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. His remarks offered a rare, personal connection to the school’s namesake, reminding everyone of the values of diplomacy, education, and public service that inspired its founding.

Community, Creativity, and Celebration

Throughout the day, the Pearson spirit was on full display — from student performances and artwork to reflections on diversity and heartfelt prayers. The program balanced meaningful tributes with moments of pure celebration, including an international food fair and a birthday cake worthy of the occasion.

But beyond the formalities, one message stood out: Lester B. Pearson High School continues to live its mission. It opens doors, inspires minds, and unites people through shared values of learning, respect, and participation.

Its story is written not only in books and banners, but in the lives of students, staff, and alumni — all carrying forward its legacy in their own unique ways.

Here’s to the Next 50 Years

As we look to the future, one thing remains certain: Lester B. Pearson High School will continue to lead with heart, purpose, and community spirit.

Happy 50th, Lester B. Pearson. Go Panthers!
