City of Ottawa Green Fleet Strategy: A Sustainable Step Towards a Cleaner Future

February 27, 2025 by Andrea Shane

The Public Works and Infrastructure Committee has approved the City of Ottawa’s Green Fleet Strategy, marking a significant step toward reducing the City’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This plan outlines how the City will transition to zero-emission vehicles, aligning with Ottawa’s goal of achieving a 100% reduction in GHG emissions by 2040 compared to 2012 levels.

What is the Green Fleet Strategy?

The strategy is based on a thorough evaluation of low-carbon technologies, with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) identified as the primary solution for most of the fleet. Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are also seen as a promising option for heavy-duty vehicles, though their adoption will depend on future technological and market advancements.

The strategy adopts an agile framework, allowing the City to quickly incorporate emerging technologies and stay ahead of industry trends. Regular reviews every five years (or sooner if needed) will ensure the City remains flexible and responsive to new developments in vehicle technology and infrastructure.

Key Benefits for Ottawa

  • Environmental Impact: Transitioning to zero-emission vehicles will significantly reduce GHG emissions, contributing to cleaner air and a healthier environment for residents.
  • Cost Savings: The strategy is expected to save over $6 million by 2040 through reduced fuel and maintenance costs.
  • Long-term Adaptability: The agile approach ensures the City can adjust as new technologies and market conditions evolve, keeping Ottawa at the forefront of sustainable transportation.

How the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee Supports the Strategy

The Public Works and Infrastructure Committee has played an essential role in approving this strategy, ensuring that the City remains committed to reducing emissions and adopting greener technologies. The Committee will continue to support the implementation process, monitor progress, and help adjust the strategy as needed based on new information or advancements in technology.

Next Steps

The Green Fleet Strategy will be presented to City Council on Wednesday, March 26, where it will be further discussed and finalized. This marks an important milestone as Ottawa works toward a cleaner, more sustainable future.
