Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations During Black History Month

During Black History Month, we proudly celebrated Black excellence across generations—honouring community leaders like Violène Gabriel whose resilience, leadership, and dedication continue to inspire and uplift Ottawa.
February 26, 2026 by Andrea Shane

This Black History Month, I had the honour of attending “Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations: From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries,” a powerful community celebration hosted by MP Mona Fortier.

The event brought together leaders, advocates, and community members to recognize the profound and lasting contributions of Black Canadians—past, present, and future. It was an inspiring reminder that Black history is not only something we reflect on, but something that continues to shape our city and our country every day.

A particularly meaningful moment was celebrating the birthday of the incredible Violène Gabriel. Her leadership, advocacy, and unwavering dedication have left a lasting mark on our community and far beyond. Violène’s life and work reflect resilience, compassion, and a lifelong commitment to uplifting others. She embodies the spirit of service and excellence that this month calls us to recognize and celebrate.

I was also pleased to attend alongside Council colleagues King and Dudas. It was encouraging to see Ottawa Police representatives present as well, demonstrating their support and engagement at this important community gathering. Events like this strengthen relationships and reinforce our shared commitment to inclusion, respect, and collaboration.

Recognizing excellence across generations strengthens us all. When we honour those who build, lead, and inspire, we help create space for the next generation of visionaries to thrive. Black History Month is a time to celebrate achievements, acknowledge challenges, and reaffirm our collective responsibility to advance equity and opportunity in our city.

Happy Birthday, Violène, and thank you for all that you continue to do for our community. Your impact is deeply appreciated and widely felt.
