Graffiti and Warmer Weather: Let’s Keep Beacon Hill – Cyrville Beautiful!
As the warmer weather rolls in, it’s that time of year again when graffiti starts to appear more frequently across Ottawa. While graffiti can be a form of urban art, when it’s done without consent, it becomes vandalism, damaging both public and private spaces.
The City of Ottawa recognizes the value of art in our community and offers legal graffiti walls and public art programs, which help foster creativity and support local artists. These programs, including those run by the Ottawa School of Art and House of Paint, provide positive outlets for artistic expression. Plus, the three designated legal graffiti walls around the city offer great opportunities for artists to showcase their work without impacting the community negatively.
However, it’s equally important that we address graffiti vandalism as soon as it appears to keep our city clean, vibrant, and welcoming. Ottawa’s Graffiti Management Strategy works to support this goal through a proactive 4E model:
Education: Raising awareness about the impacts and costs of graffiti.
Empowerment: Encouraging property owners to take responsibility and act quickly.
Eradication: Promptly removing problem graffiti to prevent it from spreading.
Enforcement: Applying the relevant laws when necessary, including the Graffiti Management By-law.
This strategy ensures a comprehensive approach, but the city also relies on its residents to report graffiti and help maintain Ottawa’s beauty. Whether it’s offensive graffiti, hate graffiti, or vandalism, it’s crucial to report it promptly so it can be addressed.
If you notice graffiti on public property, private buildings, or even OC Transpo property, you can easily report it via 3-1-1 or online. For more serious cases like hate graffiti, it’s important to contact the Ottawa Police Service immediately at 613-236-1222.
Another great way to prevent graffiti is by using creative solutions on your property. Consider working with community artists to commission murals or other art projects to deter vandalism. Taking proactive steps such as planting shrubs or adding protective coatings can also help prevent graffiti from becoming a problem.
With warmer weather here, let’s work together to keep Ottawa clean, safe, and full of pride. By encouraging artistic expression and taking swift action on graffiti removal, we can all play a part in maintaining the beauty of our city.
