Civic Duty and a Dash of Rebellion: Gloucester High at City Hall

City Hall got a welcome shake-up this week as students from Gloucester High School spent the day exploring local government from the inside out. From council chambers to behind-the-scenes briefings, these bright young minds dove headfirst into what makes a city tick.

Their day began with a full tour of the building, including the Council Chambers, where they took their seats as councillors and got a front-row look at how decisions are made. One of the most memorable moments? A mock vote on a student-led motion to cancel homework. Final tally: 10 in favour, 6 against. Democracy in action—with just the right dash of student rebellion.

The students also had the chance to step inside the Mayor’s Office, where they met members of his staff and got a sense of the leadership, coordination, and planning that happens at the very top. It was a rare opportunity to see how city-wide priorities take shape—and to hear directly from the people helping to guide them.

Throughout the building, students stopped to speak with City staff across a variety of departments. From transit planning to public works and parks to communications, staff were eager to share what they do and how their work supports the day-to-day life of Ottawa residents. The students asked thoughtful questions and gained a real sense of how many moving parts are involved in running a city.

It wasn’t just educational—it was energizing. From curious conversations and photo ops to civic debates and a bit of fun, Gloucester High’s visit brought a fresh perspective and a whole lot of heart to City Hall.
