A Day to Remember: St. John Paul II Students Take Over City Hall!

St. John Paul II School students brought energy, curiosity, and laughter to City Hall during a fun-filled day of tours, a mock council session, and inspiring conversations with city leaders.
June 19, 2025 by Andrea Shane

Today was nothing short of extraordinary at City Hall as we had the immense pleasure of welcoming a vibrant group of students from St. John Paul II School. Their visit was a delightful whirlwind of learning, laughter, and lively debate that filled the halls with energy and curiosity from start to finish.

From the moment the students stepped through our doors, it was clear that this was going to be a special day. The group eagerly embarked on a guided tour of the City Hall building, soaking in the history and significance of the place where so many decisions shaping our community take place. The tour offered a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the bustling operations that keep the city running smoothly — from administrative offices to the Council Chambers, every corner sparked interest and thoughtful questions.

Speaking of Council Chambers, the highlight of the visit was undoubtedly the students’ takeover of the room for an engaging mock council session. The atmosphere was electric as the young “council members” debated important issues, learning firsthand how local government functions and the power of collaboration and respectful dialogue. Their enthusiasm was contagious as they weighed in on city policies and community matters with impressive passion and insight.

We were also thrilled to introduce the students to some of the incredible individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep our city moving forward. Wendy, our brilliant and thoughtful City Manager, shared insights on leadership and the importance of strategic planning in managing a city’s complex operations. Ewa, the Executive Assistant to the Chief of Staff, wowed the students with her organizational prowess and behind-the-scenes coordination — truly a superstar who keeps everything running seamlessly. And Tahera, the Mayor’s amazing Director of Communications, inspired the group by explaining how effective communication builds connections and fosters transparency between the city and its residents.

The lively debate took an amusing turn when the students voted on whether to keep homework. In a moment that had everyone chuckling, it seemed some of the students misheard the question and thought the council was deciding whether to cancel Homer Simpson — cue the laughter and donut jokes! This lighthearted moment perfectly captured the joyful spirit and great sense of humor the students brought with them.

No visit to City Hall would be complete without a bit of spirited sports debate, and the “Mayor for the Day” certainly delivered! Not shying away from controversy, the student asked the question on everyone’s lips: Messi or Ronaldo? This friendly rivalry sparked a fun, spirited discussion that even some of our staff couldn’t resist joining in.

As the day drew to a close, it was clear that the future is in excellent hands. The students of St. John Paul II School demonstrated curiosity, enthusiasm, and a genuine interest in civic engagement that was truly inspiring. Their visit was a reminder of why we do the work we do — to build a community where young minds can dream big, ask tough questions, and feel empowered to make a difference.

Thank you, St. John Paul II School, for bringing your energy, your laughter, and your thoughtful questions to City Hall today. We can’t wait to see all the amazing things you’ll accomplish in the years to come!
